The Mountain Meditation

Sit in a way that feels both stable and dignified. Plant your feet firmly on the ground, hip-width apart. Let your spine rise tall, your head balanced atop it as if suspended by a thread from above. Rest your hands on your thighs. Close your eyes.

... take a moment to pause ...

Take several slow, grounding breaths. With each exhale, feel yourself becoming more rooted, more stable, more present.

... breathe deeply ...

... breathe deeply ...

... breathe deeply ...

Now bring to mind the image of a mountain. The most magnificent, majestic mountain you can imagine. Perhaps it's a mountain you've seen — in person, in a photograph, in a painting. Perhaps it's a mountain that exists only in your imagination. Whatever mountain calls to you, let it form clearly in your mind's eye.

Notice its shape. See its broad base, firmly rooted in the earth. See its slopes rising steadily upward, strong and unwavering. See its peak, reaching into the sky with quiet authority. This mountain has been here for millions of years. It is not going anywhere.

... take a moment to pause ...

Now imagine that you are this mountain. Your base is rooted deep in the earth. Your core is solid rock — ancient, immovable, enduring. Your peak rises upward, touching the sky. You are not separate from the mountain. You are the mountain.

As a mountain, you experience the seasons. Spring comes, covering your slopes in wildflowers and green meadows. Birds nest in your trees. Streams run clear and cold. Feel the aliveness of spring within you.

... take a moment to pause ...

Summer arrives with warmth and brightness. The sun beats down on your slopes. Hikers traverse your trails. Thunderstorms roll through with lightning and wind, rain lashing your sides. But you remain. The storms are not you. You are the mountain. You endure.

... take a moment to pause ...

Autumn transforms your forests to gold and crimson. Winds strip the leaves from your trees. The nights grow cold. Change is everywhere — but your essential nature remains unchanged. You are the mountain.

... take a moment to pause ...

Winter comes. Snow blankets your peak, your slopes, your valleys. Blizzards rage. Ice forms. The world is white and silent and still. And you remain. Unmoved. Patient. Knowing that beneath the snow, the seeds of spring are waiting.

... take a longer pause here ...

This is the teaching of the mountain: all things change on the surface. Seasons come and go. Weather rages and calms. Day becomes night becomes day. But the mountain itself — its essential nature — remains constant, stable, and strong.

... take a moment to pause ...

You too have seasons. Times of growth and times of loss. Times of clarity and times of confusion. Times of joy and times of sorrow. These are the weather of your life. They pass across you, through you, around you.

... take a moment to pause ...

But your essential nature — your deepest self — is like the mountain. It is stable, enduring, and unshakable. Beneath the surface drama of emotions, thoughts, and circumstances, there is a core of stillness within you that cannot be disturbed.

... take a longer pause here ...

Can you feel that core right now? That part of you that has been present through every experience of your life — watching, aware, constant? It was there when you were a child. It is here now. It will be here tomorrow. It is your mountain nature.

... take a longer pause here ...

Rest in this awareness. Be the mountain. Let whatever is happening in your life right now be the weather — passing, temporary, unable to touch your deepest foundation.

... breathe deeply ...

Take a final deep breath. As you prepare to open your eyes, carry the mountain with you. You are grounded. You are strong. You endure.

... take a moment to pause ...

Open your eyes. Stand tall. Be the mountain.
