Life Balance Wheel — Assess and Improve Every Area of Your Life

People who actively balance multiple life domains report 37% higher life satisfaction. Balance doesn't mean 10/10 everywhere — it means being intentional about your choices. Improving one area often creates positive ripple effects across others.
Life Balance Wheel Assessment
The Wheel of Life (also called the Life Balance Wheel) is one of the most widely used coaching tools in the world, originally developed by Paul J. Meyer, founder of the Success Motivation Institute, in the 1960s. The concept is simple but powerful: rate your satisfaction in each major life area, visualize the results as a wheel, and notice where the "flat spots" are that create a bumpy ride through life.
Research in positive psychology supports this holistic approach. Dr. Martin Seligman's PERMA model (Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement) and Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky's research on life satisfaction both demonstrate that well-being is multi-dimensional — excelling in one area while neglecting others leads to fragile, unsustainable happiness. A 2020 study in Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who actively balanced multiple life domains reported 37% higher life satisfaction than those who focused exclusively on career or financial success.
Part 1: Rate Each Life Area
Rate your current satisfaction in each area from 1 (deeply unsatisfied) to 10 (thriving). Be honest — this is your private assessment.
1. Career / Work: ___/10
Am I fulfilled by my work? Am I using my strengths? Do I feel valued?
Notes:
2. Finances: ___/10
Am I financially stable? Do I have savings? Am I spending in alignment with my values?
Notes:
3. Health & Fitness: ___/10
Am I physically healthy? Do I exercise regularly? Am I sleeping well? How's my nutrition?
Notes:
4. Relationships & Love: ___/10
Are my close relationships thriving? Do I feel connected and loved? Am I investing in the people who matter?
Notes:
5. Personal Growth & Learning: ___/10
Am I growing as a person? Am I learning new things? Am I challenging myself?
Notes:
6. Fun & Recreation: ___/10
Do I have enough joy and play in my life? Am I doing things I enjoy? When did I last truly have fun?
Notes:
7. Physical Environment: ___/10
Is my home a place of peace? Is my workspace supporting my productivity? Do my surroundings uplift me?
Notes:
8. Contribution & Purpose: ___/10
Am I making a difference? Am I contributing to something beyond myself? Do I feel a sense of purpose?
Notes:
Part 2: Reflection
My highest-rated area:
What's working well in this area?
My lowest-rated area:
What would need to change for this to become a 7 or 8?
The area that would create the biggest positive ripple effect if improved:
Why this area?
Am I surprised by any of my ratings?
Is there an area I've been ignoring or avoiding?
Which area would my partner/close friend say needs attention?
Part 3: 90-Day Action Plan
Choose 2-3 areas to focus on (trying to improve all 8 at once leads to burnout and no progress). Research on goal pursuit shows that focus beats breadth.
Focus Area #1:
Current rating: ___/10 → Target rating in 90 days: ___/10

Important Reminders
- Balance doesn't mean 10/10 in everything. It means being intentional about your choices and being at peace with your trade-offs.
- Seasons matter. A new parent might have lower career scores and higher relationship scores — and that can be perfectly fine.
- Small improvements compound. Moving one area from a 4 to a 6 can transform your overall life satisfaction.
- The areas are interconnected. Improving health often improves career, relationships, and mood. Start with the area that has the most positive spillover.
Complete this assessment quarterly. Over a year, you'll have four snapshots that reveal your life's trajectory and help you make intentional adjustments before small imbalances become crises.
