## People with disabilities in Singapore are getting access to new technology that could make everyday activities easier and more independent. Meta has donated 1,000 AI-powered smart glasses to four local organizations supporting people with disabilities.

Announced on October 8, 2026, the initiative aims to help people with visual impairments and other disabilities use technology in practical ways, from understanding their surroundings to staying connected with others.

## How AI Glasses Can Help

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses combine a camera, speakers, microphones, and AI features in wearable eyewear. For people who are blind or have low vision, they can help with everyday tasks such as:

- Reading text: Getting assistance with written information, including labels and signs.

- Identifying objects: Understanding what is nearby through AI-powered descriptions.

- Exploring surroundings: Receiving spoken descriptions of things around them.

- Staying connected: Making hands-free calls and using voice commands.

These features can offer additional support when navigating daily routines, shopping, or visiting unfamiliar places. Their usefulness will depend on each person's needs and how the technology performs in different situations.

## Four Organizations Bringing the Technology to People

The glasses will be distributed through four organizations:

- Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped

- Guide Dogs Singapore

- Singapore Disability Sports Council

- Gardens by the Bay

Each organization can explore ways to use the technology in its own setting, whether supporting independent living, helping athletes, or making visitor experiences more accessible.

Meta is also providing a US$30,000 grant to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped to develop free accessibility training. The program will help participants learn to use the glasses safely and confidently.

## Making Technology More Inclusive

The initiative highlights how technology can be designed and used to address everyday barriers.

For someone with a visual impairment, reading a sign or identifying an unfamiliar object can sometimes require assistance. Technology that provides spoken information hands-free may offer another way to approach these tasks and give users greater control over their daily activities.

The glasses are not a replacement for guide dogs, mobility aids, or human support. Instead, they can provide an additional tool that people may choose to use according to their needs.

## A Step Toward Greater Independence

The donation combines technology with training and support, helping ensure that recipients have an opportunity to learn how to use the devices effectively.

As the participating organizations explore practical applications, their feedback can also help reveal which features are most useful and where improvements are needed.

The initiative offers an encouraging example of innovation focused on inclusion.

> When technology is developed and introduced with people's real needs in mind, it can open up new possibilities for independence, participation, and everyday connection.
