## One of London’s busiest shopping streets just kicked off a new era—one that’s all about people, not traffic. Oxford Street, long known for its packed shops and crowds on the sidewalk, is now officially car-free along a big section. This isn’t just a small tweak; it’s a big deal for making Central London more pedestrian-friendly.

Starting October 26, 2026, the Mayor and Transport for London banned most vehicles from nearly a kilometre of Oxford Street—from Orchard Street by Selfridges to Great Portland Street near IKEA. It’s part of a bigger push to make the area greener, more inviting, and a whole lot easier to explore on foot.

## There’s No Turning Back: Oxford Street is for People Now

If you’re driving a car, riding a bus or taxi, on a bike or e-scooter, or even hailing a pedicab, you can’t go down this stretch anymore. Now, pedestrians have the space all to themselves. The only exceptions—emergency vehicles and mobility scooters, plus delivery vans early in the morning, between midnight and 7 a.m.

They’ve also tweaked the nearby transport network. Buses that used to run down Oxford Street have been rerouted; new stops are just around the corner for those still coming by public transport. Some routes and stops have changed, so regulars might need to check their travel plans.

The point is simple: make the street more comfortable for people while still letting essential traffic—deliveries, emergency services, and local businesses—get through when they have to.

## Greener, Friendlier, and More Relaxed

Banning traffic is just the start. London wants to do more: bring in trees, fresh places to sit, and lively public spaces. By spring 2027, you’ll see:

- 50 new trees lining Oxford Street

- Over 100 seats and tables where people can rest or grab a bite

- Two new public squares for events or just hanging out

- Better lighting, clearer signs, and spots to take a breather

Parts of the road will also be raised to be level with the sidewalk, making it smoother to walk or use a wheelchair. The goal? Turn Oxford Street from a manic traffic corridor to a place where people want to linger—browse the shops, meet friends, or simply soak up city life.

## Backing Shops and the Local Scene

Oxford Street draws in hundreds of thousands of people every day—it’s a retail powerhouse for London and a magnet for tourists. But recently, it’s faced tough competition from online shopping and rival destinations. Making more room for people is meant to give the street a shot in the arm.

With fewer vehicles, shoppers can explore at their own pace. Places to sit, new squares, and the chance to just hang out instead of rushing through? It might encourage people to stay longer and spend more.

The changes are rolling out step by step. Officials are watching closely: how do people use the space, what do locals and shop owners think, what’s working or not? Their feedback will shape what the street finally becomes.

This isn’t just about making the area look good. It has to work for everyone—shoppers, residents, workers, people with disabilities, older visitors, and all those still traveling into town.

## Thinking Ahead (and Around the Corners)

Shutting out traffic on a street like this opens up possibilities but also affects the nearby neighborhood. Diverted buses and other vehicles could spill traffic elsewhere, so Transport for London is keeping an eye on things. Good access to shops and businesses still matters, and the city’s ready to tweak the plan as they see how real life unfolds.

## Rethinking What a Street Can Be

Cities everywhere are grappling with this: should streets serve cars, or should they be living spaces for people? Oxford Street’s makeover is London’s answer. Wide sidewalks, trees, seats, and space for events are coming—making the street not just a way to get somewhere, but somewhere worth being.

The whole transformation will take a bit longer, and whether it really works will depend on how well it serves everyone, visitors and locals alike. But one thing’s clear: Oxford Street is headed in a new direction, and it’s putting people front and center. London just got a little more welcoming.
