Kenya Expands Lake Turkana Wind Power Project to Boost Clean Energy Reach

What Happened

Kenya is moving ahead with an expansion of the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, Africa’s largest operational wind farm. The original facility, with a capacity of 310 MW from 365 turbines, began operation in June 2018. It currently supplies roughly 17–20% of Kenya’s national grid capacity.
The new expansion aims to augment capacity by around 40%, powering an additional 2 million homes and reinforcing the country’s clean energy infrastructure.

What Is Good About It

  • Substantial clean energy generation: Delivers approximately 1.5 TWh of renewable electricity annually, enough for about 1 million households, while cutting CO₂ emissions by over 736,000 t per year.
  • Economic boost: The original build created up to 600 construction jobs (averaging 300), with an expected 150 permanent jobs and about 300 roles during infrastructure upgrades.
  • Infrastructure improvements: Rehabilitation of around 200 km of rural roads and establishment of a 428 km, 400 kV transmission line not only supports the wind farm but also enhances connectivity for remote regions.
  • Innovative financing model: Utilized a mix of equity, mezzanine, and senior debt—including support from the African Development Bank and European Investment Bank—to fund the USD 680–780 million project.

Why It Leads to Positivity

  • Energy security: Diversifies Kenya’s power mix, reducing reliance on expensive, often unreliable fossil- and hydro-based sources, particularly during droughts.
  • Economic uplift: The project is injecting around €22.7 million in annual tax revenues, saves an estimated €100 million in fuel imports, and supports local businesses through improved transport links .
  • Social impact: Driving community development through road access, water and sanitation infrastructure, health and education initiatives, and targeted programs for disease prevention initiatives such as HIV/AIDS awareness .
  • Environmental leadership: Offers a successful model of large-scale renewable integration in sub-Saharan Africa, helping Kenya progress toward its Vision 2030 goals and reinforcing regional climate leadership.
