What happens when students get the chance to use AI to tackle real environmental issues? In Dubai, they’re not just dreaming—they’re making things happen.

At the Green Innovation Challenge during Ru’ya Careers UAE 2026, students from all across the UAE showed up with fresh ideas about how AI can help with recycling, agriculture, and food security.

About 160 students jumped in with their concepts. In the end, seven teams made it through to the final round, where they worked alongside experts and mentors, polishing up their projects before presenting them to a panel of judges.

## Young Problem-Solvers in Action

The winners proved that young people know how to use tech to take on everyday environmental problems.

First place went to NAWA, an app built by students from Dubai National School – Al Barsha. It’s all about making recycling rewarding—users log recyclable items and score points, badges, and cool prizes.

Second place went to Agri-Compass from Zayed Educational Complex – Al Saf, Kalba. Their system uses sensor data, soil info, and AI to help farmers figure out which crops will thrive in their fields.

And in third place was ASL, a project by Deira International School students, who combined AI and fermentation to produce local protein for animal feed—a new way to boost food security.

## Not Just a Contest

This whole event was never just about prizes.

For a lot of these students, it was a chance to see what goes into turning an idea into something that actually works.

They learned how to:

- Spot a problem.

- Shape a solution.

- Use technology that matters.

Plus, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment will connect the winning teams with more mentors, specialists, and partners.

With that kind of support, these projects have a real shot at going further.

> Here’s the thing: a student idea doesn’t need to be perfect at the start.

What really counts is getting to test it, learning from what didn’t work, and making it better the next time.

## Fresh Thinking, Real Impact

These teams took on all kinds of issues—from getting more people to recycle to helping farmers make smarter choices.

What connects them all is a belief that technology isn’t just for experts—anyone can use it to build a more sustainable future.

These students aren’t waiting to grow up to make a difference.

They’re out there experimenting, building, and figuring things out right now.

> Sometimes, a greener future starts with nothing more than a simple question: “What if we did this differently?”
